KOREAN PUBLIC BATHS & SAUNAS
Public bath houses (Jimjilbangs), play a big part in Korean culture and many people visit one at least once a week. It is not permitted to wear clothing, but there are separate bathing areas for men and women.
There are several pools at the bath house, with different temperatures and different mineral contents. Before entering a pool you need to wash yourself thoroughly and rinse off all soap using one of the showers. It is recommended that long hair be tied up while in the bath.
Body scrubbing is part of the Korean bath house experience. Using a special towel, people scrub their bodies to exfoliate. Most bath houses also offer a body scrubbing service. The body scrub usually lasts an hour and includes a massage.
Korean saunas are similar to Jimjilbangs (bath houses). Many public bath houses also offer saunas. Unlike the baths, the saunas are unisex. In the saunas one hires relaxing pyjama like outfits to wear. The saunas differ according to temperature, minerals and materials of the walls.
