About Geoje Island
The name Geoje comes from an ancient Chinese character, meaning “Greatly Bestowing & Nurturing”. Geoje-do or Geoje Island (alternative spelling Koje) is Korea’s second largest island. Located off the southern coast of Gyeongsangnam province, the island is joined to land by bridges giving access to Busan and Tongyeong. Since December 2010, the Geoga Bridge has provided a road link to Busan. Geoje-si consists of Geoje-do Island and 73 other islands (10 inhabited) and covers an area of 402.06 square kilometres. As of April 2021, its population includes 250,321 Korean nationals and 6,167 foreign nationals.
Geoje Island features several natural harbours. Shipbuilding is the largest industry on the island. The second and third largest shipyards in South Korea are both located on the island. Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, DSME, is located in Okpo and Samsung Heavy Industries, SHI, in the island’s largest district of Gohyeon.
For many, Geoje Island is considered a holiday destination. There are a number of beaches on the island, of which Deokpo, Wahyeon, Heungnam and Gujora Beach are some of the most popular.
Geoje has a very mountainous terrain. Famous mountains of Geoje include Mangsan (397m), Guksabong (464m), Nojasan (565m), Sanbangsan (502m) and Daegeumsan (437m). At 585m, Garasan is the highest mountain on Geoje.
